Units to Unity

From the Atom to the Solar System

The collage takes us from the proton  (top left) through to element and molecule and finally to strands of DNA in the first row.

The second row starts with a group of cells advances to the tissues, to the organ which in this case is the liver.

The third row represents units2unity from the organ (liver with its connections (arteries and veins to body systems and the body.

The fourth row advances from the body to the person, couple family home community.

The last row is the village advancing to the city, state country earth and solar system.

Note the similarity between the proton and the earth, and between the atom and solar system.

The Atom

Artistic licence has been taken to present a series of atoms in the background of repetitive images of the part of the solar system.  The structure of the atom with its central  nucleus dominates the scene and is shown with orbiting shells containing the electrons  ( Davidoff)45828b12.800

Where does biology fit in between the atom and the solar system and universe?

The atom is the building block of all structure and is seen at the bottom of the image and the solar system as part of the universe lies as a black mystery above.  Between the two stands my daughter Danielle on the beaches of Newport Rhode island pondering at the age of 9 years where she and the rest of biology fits in the grand scheme of events.  (Davidoff art) 45826b04.800

A Cancer Cell – Aberrant Sense of Time

The image represents the life of a single set of columnar cells showing a progressioon of generations as the cell lives dies and is regenerated. The orange secretions of the cell are seen in the background of the pink cytoplasm and the purple nucleus. The nucleus of the newesest generation and cell is seen as a clock that has become distorted and time has become disordered. This process is abnormal and is a forerunner of a malignant process.

The series of images starts with the cells of the liver (a) that unite and organize to form sheets of cells (b), that in turn organize to form lobules of the liver (c) which in turn for subsegments (d), which form lobes (e), and eventually the liver itself (f). 13456cl.8s liver parts normal lobules cells cords lobules segments units to unity Courtesy Ashley Davidoff MD copyright 2009 all rights reserved

More Than Just A Meeting of Sperm and Egg

This image attempts to capture a unique and powerful moment where an heroic sperm wins a magnificent race and is rewarded by a powerful union with the egg in waiting. Simultaneously a spark of life and an  inexplicable inspiration gives birth to a new and unique life.  The background of greens and blues represent the raw materials of heaven and earth.

The Ball of the Blastocyst  Before the Storm of Differentiation

Power of Multiplication

The ball of cells is called the blastocyst which is the result of rapid multiplication of the fertilized egg as the organism starts its embryological pathway to full life.  The greens and blues in the background represent the raw materials of life.  The ball of cells almost seems alive and mobile if you stare for a while.
